Summary

For three days battle has raged in the snow around the great city of Tar Valon。 In the city, a Foretelling of the future is uttered。 On the slopes of Dragonmount, the immense mountain that looms over the city, is born an infant prophesied to change the world。 That child must be found before the forces of the Shadow have an opportunity to kill him。 Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together。 But those paths are filled with complications and dangers, for Moiraine, of the Royal House of Cairhien, whose king has just died, and Lan, considered the uncrowned king of a nation long dead, find their lives threatened by the plots of those seeking power。 "New Spring" related some of these events, in compressed form; New Spring: The Novel tells the whole story。

Prequels are tricky things: if you've done your job right already, they are not necessary。 All they do is elaborate (and possibly contradict) the events and character moments we already know about, based on what we have already read or seen。 New Spring doesn't really tell us anything new, but it shows us some things that we may have been mildly interested in: how some major characters in the main series meet, how they got into positions of power in the first place, things like that。 It doesn't h Prequels are tricky things: if you've done your job right already, they are not necessary。 All they do is elaborate (and possibly contradict) the events and character moments we already know about, based on what we have already read or seen。 New Spring doesn't really tell us anything new, but it shows us some things that we may have been mildly interested in: how some major characters in the main series meet, how they got into positions of power in the first place, things like that。 It doesn't have the main antagonists of the regular series, really, as those are all surprises as you progress through it。 Yet, it does have some other characters in brief moments that take away from some of the surprises of the main series, which then makes reading this first (i。e。, before Eye of the World) not a great idea。Reading it when it was published, toward the end of the series, which is what I usually advocate (reading series in the order they were written), just slows down your momentum and distracts from all the characters and plots you are trying to keep track of - especially since you know already the main goal of the characters in NS is not going to come true, if you've read the series so far。Strangely enough, it's a pretty decent book。 It's fast-paced, has some rather shocking twists and turns by the end, and tells a fairly cohesive story on its own。 It's hard to describe how much it requires of you the reader, since I'm so familiar with the world of Wheel of Time already going into this。 I don't think non-WoT fans would like it as a basic fantasy story。 It's not too overtly connected to the main story of the series, but at the same time it's very much part of that world, showing you glimpses of nations, powers, conflicts and such, which are lightly mentioned but present, familiar nods those in the know but likely bemusing signals to those starting here。 It's a refreshing swift gallop after the slog of Crossroads of Twilight (though that book is often unjustly overly criticized, I think) for faithful readers, but since it doesn't reward those faithful readers with any meaningful new tidbits, it's a pleasant bunch of "oh, that's how that happened。 Neat。" moments。It was fine。 It suffers from a few too many cameos as I said, and some new characters, who we immediately know we don't need to really care about since we don't see them in the main series (again, from the perspective of reading it between CoT and KoD)。 For the reader approaching this first in the series, those same cameos likely feel like inside jokes (always unpleasant for those on the outside) or a warning signal of "this series throws dozens of names at you - run!" To be fair, it does, but the main series doesn't expect you to know them already, which NS sort of does。I'm glad it exists。 I wish Mr。 Jordan lived long enough to write more of these。 I'm sure we'd all have loved to see some before-they-were-Forsaken stories。 The past is far more interesting than the present (which is typical of most fantasy stories, really, such as LotR and ASoIaF), anyway。 Ah, well。 This is fine。 If read in the order of publication, it feels better than it likely is because of the weaker novels lately in the series ("they can't all be bangers"), but it is decent and fun。 。。。more

I'm currently reading through the WoT series for the first time and read this after book 10 in the series。 I had heard a lot of mixed things about this book before starting it, but found the story very enjoyable。 The normal Jordan pacing issues are very present, but i'm used to that by now。I found this book a really lovely break, and palate cleanser, from the rest of the books in the series。 I love how Jordan wrote the relationship between Moiraine and Siun especially。 While relationships betwee I'm currently reading through the WoT series for the first time and read this after book 10 in the series。 I had heard a lot of mixed things about this book before starting it, but found the story very enjoyable。 The normal Jordan pacing issues are very present, but i'm used to that by now。I found this book a really lovely break, and palate cleanser, from the rest of the books in the series。 I love how Jordan wrote the relationship between Moiraine and Siun especially。 While relationships between characters in the main books are often filled with misunderstanding, mistrust, anger, and jealousy, it's refreshing to see how much the two accepted genuinely loved, cared, trusted, and relied upon one another。 Probably my favourite book since the first few in the series。 。。。more

Revisiting this entire series (possibly) as I see a TV series to be released soon, It will probably be rubbish as nothing can capture the essence of what the individual derives from a well written book。 First up the Wheel of Time is in many ways plagiarism, its Lord of the Rings in everything but name (in my opinion) but that being said, I loved it when I first read them and thats all that matters。This backstory is really only appreciated after reading at least the first book, it offers a good i Revisiting this entire series (possibly) as I see a TV series to be released soon, It will probably be rubbish as nothing can capture the essence of what the individual derives from a well written book。 First up the Wheel of Time is in many ways plagiarism, its Lord of the Rings in everything but name (in my opinion) but that being said, I loved it when I first read them and thats all that matters。This backstory is really only appreciated after reading at least the first book, it offers a good insight into some of the main protagonists and adds layers to what we already know, enjoy。 。。。more

This prequel gives a nice story - maybe not the one that everyone wants - and some background information on some of the important WoT characters that aren't necessarily the main ones in the regular books。It's certainly not a complete story。 While it ends at a good point, in some ways it's in the middle of a story that is nowhere near being resolved, so in that sense, it's frustrating。 Moraine is 'on the run' from the White Tower, and her friend Siuan is a newly-raised Sister who is little more This prequel gives a nice story - maybe not the one that everyone wants - and some background information on some of the important WoT characters that aren't necessarily the main ones in the regular books。It's certainly not a complete story。 While it ends at a good point, in some ways it's in the middle of a story that is nowhere near being resolved, so in that sense, it's frustrating。 Moraine is 'on the run' from the White Tower, and her friend Siuan is a newly-raised Sister who is little more than a clerk。 We we "meet" them in the main storyline, they are very far removed from there。。。 granted, it's 15+ years later, so a lot of changes take place over that time, but leaving them as they are felt weird。And we get a very strange plot about Lan and his lost kingdom。Other than that, it was a typical WoT story - all the elements you're used to。 Good ending, a bunch of characters that we could have lived without, but a good time overall。 I read it after Book 7, and it was very twisty to go back to a place where the Aiel were so 'foreign' and 'other', since this takes place at the end of the Aiel War。Look, if you're reading the series, you're going to read this。 You've already read all those massive other books - this is like a leaflet next to them。 。。。more

Like the series, this WoT book suffered a bit from its pacing。 The first 60% of the book was a bit slow and all of the information regarding Lan that I was really interested in happend in the last part of the book。 I enjoyed being back in the wild again though and am going to miss these characters!

9/17/21: 5 stars。 Loved this far more than I was planning to。 Was an odd change to read a fast paced and tightly written Wheel of Time book。 Proof that Robert Jordan CAN write like this if he wants to, but for the main 14 books he just chooses not to do so。 Which, honestly, is not necessarily a bad thing。 Anyway, from here I go on to Lord of Chaos!1。 The Fires of Heaven2。 New Spirng3。 The Dragon Reborn4。 The Great Hunt5。 The Eye of the World6。 The Shadow Rising

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 New Spring, the prequel to the WOT , is all about Suian and Morainne as I can say focussing mainly on Morainne。 Their journey from Novice to being raised as an Aes sedai and Lan becoming a warder to Morainne。 Robert Jordan books are very accessible to read。 It was fun。 It's good to read this prequel after The Fires of Heaven (Book 5 of WOT)。 I will give 3/5 to this book。 New Spring, the prequel to the WOT , is all about Suian and Morainne as I can say focussing mainly on Morainne。 Their journey from Novice to being raised as an Aes sedai and Lan becoming a warder to Morainne。 Robert Jordan books are very accessible to read。 It was fun。 It's good to read this prequel after The Fires of Heaven (Book 5 of WOT)。 I will give 3/5 to this book。 。。。more

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would。 I really enjoyed this prequel story, and seeing so many ‘adult’ characters from the series being younger and trying to figure things out was so much fun。 onto A Memory of Light 😭

This book really surprised me。 I loved it so much。 I thought it would be way more like Dungeons and Dragons。 I love getting to hear Robert Jordan talk at the end on Audible。

Cute little back story。 Good to see Morain after。。。 well, it was just good to see her at her younger self and how her and Lan came to be together。

Remember this is a prequel to the overall story。 We get bits of the story in the other books too but this give the background to Moiraine and Lan and how they came together and started on the path。 It also provides the background of how the Aes Sedai are trained and how the power works。 Its as enjoyable as the rest of the series my only caution would be that don't start this book till you have read at least the first 3 books in the series。 Remember this is a prequel to the overall story。 We get bits of the story in the other books too but this give the background to Moiraine and Lan and how they came together and started on the path。 It also provides the background of how the Aes Sedai are trained and how the power works。 Its as enjoyable as the rest of the series my only caution would be that don't start this book till you have read at least the first 3 books in the series。 。。。more

3。5⭐This was my first time reading the prequel, even though I read some of the other books many years ago, and found it a good complement to the main series。 It doesn't spoil anything, as it takes place 20 years before The Eye of the World, but a first time reader probably shouldn't start with this one as it might take away some of the mystery and suspicion regarding some characters in TEotW。An enjoyable novel for the most part, though maybe a bit slow at first。 3。5⭐This was my first time reading the prequel, even though I read some of the other books many years ago, and found it a good complement to the main series。 It doesn't spoil anything, as it takes place 20 years before The Eye of the World, but a first time reader probably shouldn't start with this one as it might take away some of the mystery and suspicion regarding some characters in TEotW。An enjoyable novel for the most part, though maybe a bit slow at first。 。。。more

This is my first read through。 Somehow in all my travels and readings I've missed the most popular and long lasting fantasy series around the world。 But all I can say is just wow。 The prequel was quite wonderful and I can't wait for the next one。 This is my first read through。 Somehow in all my travels and readings I've missed the most popular and long lasting fantasy series around the world。 But all I can say is just wow。 The prequel was quite wonderful and I can't wait for the next one。 。。。more

This is a good book for both rabid fans of Robert Jordan who may not have read the series and those who are looking for a way to "ease" into what can be a daunting series with many books。 This is a good book for both rabid fans of Robert Jordan who may not have read the series and those who are looking for a way to "ease" into what can be a daunting series with many books。 。。。more

A great short WoT volume - makes the most sense when read after book 5 of the main series despite it being more or less a prequel。

As many already pointed out, if you are new to WOT universe read this book the last (or maybe after 2nd or 3rd book) since the story only provides some back story to the well-known characters of the actual series。 I also think the style of this book is very much different than the series and it almost feels like it could have been written by some other author than Robert Jordan。 It is not a must read but a welcome addition to the WOT universe。

A bit fast-paced for WOT, but an interesting backstory nonetheless

Great to go back to Randland, not the most exciting book but Jordan's writing is beautiful as always。 Definitely going to reread Eye of the World in preparation for the series in November! [Sep 8, 2021] I don't know how necessary this was。 It's basically an elaboration on the story Moiraine told Rand in The Great Hunt about how she and Siuan knew the Dragon was Reborn and started searching, with how she met Lan thrown into the second half。 It explains a little bit why they were the only two people in the White Tower who knew the Dragon was Reborn before the start of the series, it explains a little bit the political situation after Laman's death and Moiraine's situation as a Damod [Sep 8, 2021] I don't know how necessary this was。 It's basically an elaboration on the story Moiraine told Rand in The Great Hunt about how she and Siuan knew the Dragon was Reborn and started searching, with how she met Lan thrown into the second half。 It explains a little bit why they were the only two people in the White Tower who knew the Dragon was Reborn before the start of the series, it explains a little bit the political situation after Laman's death and Moiraine's situation as a Damodred, the former ruling house of Cairhien。 Neither of these I felt were big issues that needed addressing。 Not much happens in this book, certainly nothing relevant to the plot of the main series and I don't feel like it revealed anything new or significant about the characters either。This was written later and the later books in the series tend to get lost in the minutiae of the half-dozen main perspective characters plus a dozen secondary perspective characters。 This book is fairly focused with only two perspective characters, that and the fact that it's so short are the only things saving it from tediousness。 。。。more

It felt so good to be back in Jordans world again! After finishing WoT I took a break before reading this prequel, and now was the time! I think I might even start a re-read of the series。。。 At least the first one!

I read New Spring after Fires of Heaven, which I found to be one of the stronger books so far in the Wheel of Time series。 Unfortunately New Spring didn't continue in the same vein and instead meandered ponderously through a less than intriguing story。Whilst the premise, of discovering why Moiraine and Lan have dedicated their lives to the discovery of the Dragon Reborn, is an interesting one and something as a WoT fan I was intrigued to learn more about, the execution was lacking。 The plot was I read New Spring after Fires of Heaven, which I found to be one of the stronger books so far in the Wheel of Time series。 Unfortunately New Spring didn't continue in the same vein and instead meandered ponderously through a less than intriguing story。Whilst the premise, of discovering why Moiraine and Lan have dedicated their lives to the discovery of the Dragon Reborn, is an interesting one and something as a WoT fan I was intrigued to learn more about, the execution was lacking。 The plot was desperately slow and whilst Robert Jordan's better books are forgiving of his glacial writing style, when the plot itself is lacking, this slowness is exposed。 I found myself thankful to reach the inevitably bloody conclusion that was so obvious in the coming so that I could move on to a non WoT book。 The finale whilst a welcome change of pace was utterly predictable, from the discovery of the Black Ajah to the guy with bell's in his hair (honestly I can't remember of find his name, that's how forgettable he is) being a darkfriend。 I also didn't entirely feel the gravity I thought I should when Lan agrees to becoming Moirane's warder, it didn't feel like Lan had reached the correct mindset yet。。。 The worldbuilding around the White Tower, with the Aes Sedai trial and the Ajah secrets, was welcome and I enjoyed this enrichment to Jordan's epic worldbuilding。 I also enjoyed the character development of Siuane with Moiraine during their more formative years。 In contrast, I despised Moiraine and Lan's relationship, the 'pranks' just don't seem to fit with Moiraine's personality and I felt these scenes jarring from the main plot line。 I especially didn't enjoy the Black Ajah realization of Siuane and Moiraine, it felt very sudden to be making such assumptions based on such little evidence。 Furthermore, the areas of political intrigue just weren't explored fully, especially Lan's Carneira, which seemed to be needlessly thrown in with some pretty weird seeming consequences。 For me this was just a bit of context for the WoT proper, I consumed this as I might an oyster, quickly and with a sour look on my mouth。 I suspect most people could even forgo reading NS and save themselves the effort。。。 。。。more
